- Fellers... The problem is not the floppy drive or not "wanting"
- to put a standard HD drive into a new Amiga model. I'm sure
- AT would do so if they could do it easily, since it would
- barely cost more than DD drives these days.
-
- But the problem is Paula, our trusty but ageing chip-girl that has
- been doing overtime since 1985.
-
- Not redesigning Paula would mean that AT would have to use special
- "slowed-down" drives, which they can't get because nobody seems intent
- of making them. If they could get them though, it would drive the
- price of the machine up by a significant amount. Custom stuff
- is expensive, as we all know too well.
-
- Redesigning Paula, on the other hand, isn't done in a day. If the
- (relatively small) team at AT want to have a 40 Mhz 030 machine
- with standard SIMM support and a redesigned motherboard ready by
- march, they will probably have to choose where to invest their
- available time. Considering harddisks are indeed getting more and more
- standard in Amigas too, high-density floppy support is not something
- that oughta be on top of the "to-do" list if they've got limited time,
- IMHO.
